Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This aspect is often one of the most daunting when beginning university, and if you’re a future student, it might be a significant worry for you. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, just days before classes started, I spent the entire day secluding myself in my room, too afraid to venture out and introduce myself. Today, however, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the best bonds here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I come to realize? I discovered that taking a leap in the early part of the year is vital. If you’re not completely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless ice-breaker chances and events designed to help you engage with others. I also learned that being true to yourself is essential. With so many diverse individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.

Another obstacle was the academic workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly an elevation from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in such a setting can challenge your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate this feeling, one being the acknowledgement that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you struggle to grasp a concept, I can almost guarantee that others are too. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most critical lesson to internalize in the first year. Seek help from fellow students and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are extraordinary. They genuinely want us to succeed and are aware of the difficulties students encounter. They show empathy towards us and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had started earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I took one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position helped me build relationships with the staff members, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to connect with the faculty, and it’s one of the best steps you can take for your own benefit! My principal takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often misplaced and can be eased by utilizing the support systems provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never truly alone and how to have fun alongside the pressures of exams and due dates.
