Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxieties, fears, and uncertainties about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my usually timid and introverted self was prepared for. Looking back now, I recognize an academic year filled with personal growth, obstacles, and immense enjoyment! But what insights have I gained from this experience, and what is my current state?
One of the earliest and most intimidating challenges I faced was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more nerve-wracking parts of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, it might be one of your primary worries. On my first day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the commencement of the term, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here now, I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I have ever had at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all stemming from simple conversations with fellow students in alike circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s always advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker activities and events will be available to help you bond with others. I also found that above all, being yourself is key. With a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to connect with those similar to you.
Another challenge was the academic load and the difficulty of the material. There was definitely a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in many aspects, an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in such a demanding environment can be tough on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few elements assisted me in overcoming that sense of inadequacy, one being the reassurance that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If something doesn’t make sense to you, I can nearly assure you that others are confused as well. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are fantastic. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and acknowledge that students face challenges. They show understanding and maintain steady communication with us throughout the year concerning our difficulties. I didn’t fully take advantage of the supportive resources until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking chances previously – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role helped me connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for your well-being! My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to embrace the assistance available to you. You can never receive too much help!
In conclusion, this year has imparted the lesson that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently unwarranted and can be eased by the various support systems provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never solitary, and it has demonstrated how to find enjoyment despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
