Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainties about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Exploring the unknown was not something my previously shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?

One of the earliest and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most anxiety-inducing elements of beginning university, and if you are a prospective student, it could be your primary worry. On my first day moving into my accommodation, a few days before classes kicked off, I stayed in my room all day, too scared to go out and meet new people. Now, I can proudly say that I’ve made some of the finest friends here at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar predicaments. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking risks at the start of the year is essential. If you’re not quite ready or feel uncomfortable, don’t stress! There are countless ice-breaker activities and events to aid in connecting with others. I also realized that being authentic is crucial. With such a diverse array of people across the program and campus, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can weigh heavily on your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me through this experience was the acknowledgment that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you’re struggling to grasp something, I can almost assure you that others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek help. This may be the most critical lesson to internalize during your first year. Reach out to peers and faculty for assistance!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They are empathetic and keep open communication with us about our concerns. I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had engaged with it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I made one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position permitted me to become acquainted with the faculty, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the best steps you can take for your own benefit! My main lesson from this facet of university life is to make the most of the support available. You can never have too much assistance!

In conclusion, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both leading up to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased through the support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I’m never alone and has taught me how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
