**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the brink of beginning my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been somewhat introverted, venturing into the unknown felt quite daunting. Now, as I reflect on an academic year brimming with growth, obstacles, and memorable moments, I can’t help but think about what I’ve learned and how much I’ve progressed.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting elements of starting university was forming friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, it’s likely a concern on your mind as well. On my first day in student housing, just days before the term commenced, I spent the entirety of the day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself.
Looking back to today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve cultivated some truly remarkable friendships. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, which all began with casual conversations and bonding with others who were experiencing the same feelings as I was.
What lessons did I derive from this? First, taking that initial leap of faith at the start of the year is essential. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreakers and activities specifically designed to facilitate making new acquaintances. Second, embracing your true self is the best approach. With such a varied group of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who connect with you.
### Addressing the Academic Hurdles
Another significant adaptation was the academic workload and the complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was considerable, and the change from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities when observing others who appear to be studying effortlessly and thriving.
What supported me through this experience was understanding that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others are facing the same issue. The pivotal factor is to seek assistance. This perhaps stands as the most crucial lesson I absorbed during my first year. Whether it’s reaching out to classmates or faculty, requesting help is indispensable.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of faculty, I cannot stress enough how incredible the staff in the Materials department are. They genuinely care about students’ success and understand the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication and provided unwavering support.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until the year was nearing its end, and looking back, I wish I would have utilized it earlier. One proactive step I took early on was becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to establish connections with faculty, which turned out to be exceedingly beneficial. There are countless opportunities to engage with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Utilize the help and resources at your disposal—you can never have too much support.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on the year, I have learned an immense amount. The anxious feelings I experienced before starting university—and even throughout the year—were frequently misplaced. With the abundant support available from both faculty and fellow students, I came to realize that I was never truly alone.
Above all, I discovered how to balance the stress stemming from exams and deadlines alongside moments of happiness and enjoyment. This year has been a journey of self-discovery, development, and connection, and I am looking forward to what the future holds.
