Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, hurdles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what have I gained this year, and what is my current status?

Among the first and most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forging friendships. This is certainly one of the more frightening aspects of beginning university, and if you’re perusing this as a potential student, it might be one of your main worries. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term start, I spent the whole day retreating to my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Sitting here today, I can say with assurance that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and in this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it simply required engaging in casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what have I learned? I discovered it’s always best to take a chance at the start of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events available to help you connect with others. I also learned that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With such a wide variety of people across the course and campus, you’re certain to find individuals like yourself.

Another hurdle was dealing with the workload and the level of difficulty of the content. There was undoubtedly a significant increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always kind to your self-esteem; you may witness others studying and feel less capable. Several factors helped me move past that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same thing. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that others are also puzzled. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Seek help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to flourish and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They empathize with students and maintain regular communication with us throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I did take one at the year’s inception by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to familiarize myself with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to get acquainted with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best steps you can take for yourself! My main conclusion regarding this facet of university life is to capitalize on the assistance provided. You can never receive too much!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated by the various support systems offered by faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
