Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was far from the norm for my previously quiet and withdrawn self. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal growth, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re a prospective student, it could be a major concern. On my initial day settling into my residence, just days prior to the start of the term, I remained in my room all day, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Today, though, I can proudly assert that I have formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which all commenced with a bit of casual conversation with those in similar situations. So, what did I learn? I realized that making an effort at the start of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There are numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also recognized that being authentic is essential. With such a wide range of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re likely to find people who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a leap from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can challenge your self-esteem; seeing others study may leave you feeling inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone shares the same experience. If something is unclear, I can almost assure you that others are facing similar struggles. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to grasp during the first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty for help!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are dedicated to your success and recognize that students face challenges. They relate to students and maintain open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had started earlier. I spoke of taking chances earlier – I took one at the year’s beginning by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never receive too much help!

Ultimately, this year has illuminated for me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be alleviated through the various support systems provided by faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never isolated and how to have fun despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
