Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was on the brink of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embarking on the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved personality was accustomed to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it has been a period of considerable personal development, challenges, and abundant enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current standing?
One of the initial and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forging friendships. This certainly ranks among the more daunting facets of beginning university, and if you are reading this as a prospective student, it could be one of your foremost concerns. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, just days before the term commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room due to feeling too daunted to venture out and greet others. However, sitting here now, I can assertively state that I have formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a leap at the year’s outset is always beneficial. If you don’t quite feel prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also found that if there’s one thing you can be, it’s yourself. With so many diverse individuals in the course and university; you’re sure to find like-minded people.
Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a transition from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always conducive to your confidence; you may observe others studying and begin to feel inadequate. A few things aided me through that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone shares your experience. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly guarantee there are several others who also don’t comprehend it. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Reach out to both your peers and the faculty for help!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The staff in Materials are incredible. They genuinely wish for your success and understand that students encounter challenges. They relate to students and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I regret not doing so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is exceedingly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to engage with staff, and it’s indeed one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the assistance being offered to you. You can never have too much!
Overall, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are almost always baseless and can be eased by the many support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment even amidst the stresses of exams and deadlines.
