Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my Materials Science and Engineering degree as a first-year student. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not something my formerly timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year abundant with personal growth, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what have I discovered, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This often ranks as one of the most frightening elements of beginning university, and if you’re a future student perusing this, it might be a significant worry for you. On my initial day moving into my housing, a few days ahead of classes starting, I spent the whole day in my room, too nervous to venture out and meet others. Now, I’m pleased to assert that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, with the journey kicked off by casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I glean? I realized that taking that initial plunge at the year’s start is vital. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaker occasions available to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that staying true to yourself is essential. With such a variety of people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who click with you.

Another obstacle was the intensity and complexity of the workload. The transition from A-levels was certainly significant, and in some respects, the leap from the first to the second term was even larger. Being in this atmosphere can impact your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was the realization that everyone is in the same boat. If something isn’t clear to you, I can almost promise that others are puzzled too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to absorb in the first year. Reach out for help from both peers and staff!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking leaps before – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is tremendously valuable. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My main takeaway is to make the most of the support available. You can never have too much help!

All in all, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased with the support offered by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never truly alone and how to have fun alongside stressors like exams and deadlines.
