Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize a journey filled with personal growth, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided me, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most formidable challenges was establishing friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it could be one of your greatest worries. On my initial day moving into my residence, just days before the semester commenced, I spent the whole day cloistered in my room out of fear to step out and introduce myself to others. Sitting here today, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced, here at this university and within this program. I’ve built a second family at Imperial, and it all stemmed from engaging in small talk with others in similar circumstances. So, what have I learned? I discovered that it’s always advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you find yourself unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and events designed to assist you in connecting with people. I also learned that if you can be anything, just be yourself. There’s an array of diverse individuals throughout the course and university; you’re certain to meet people who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was managing the workload and the complexities of the content. There was undoubtedly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater shift from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment isn’t always beneficial for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel less capable. A few different things helped me cope with that sensation, one being the realization that everyone is in the same situation. If you find a topic confusing, I can almost assure you there are others who feel the same. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Request help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is outstanding. They are invested in your success and are aware that students face challenges. They show compassion for students and keep lines of communication open with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the support services until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I talked about taking chances – I did take one at the year’s outset by becoming a well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s certainly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to fully leverage the support that’s available to you. You can never have an excess of help!

Generally, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both preceding and during university, are typically unfounded and can be mitigated through the numerous support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated, and it has shown me how to relish my experiences amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
