Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of entering university, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, it may be a significant concern for you. On my first day settling into housing, just days before classes started, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too daunted to venture out and meet people. Now, I can confidently assert that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this program. I’ve created a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with some casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I grasp? I realized that taking a chance at the start of the year is essential. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking events to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that being authentic is crucial. With such a diverse group of individuals in the course and university, you are sure to find those who connect with you.

Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a noticeable increase compared to A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A couple of things aided me during this time, one being the reminder that everyone faces similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that others don’t either. So, do not hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most essential lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from your peers and instructors!

This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges students confront. They show empathy towards students and maintain open communication all year long regarding our issues. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so sooner. I spoke about taking chances earlier – I embraced one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to become acquainted with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My main lesson is to make the most of the assistance provided. You can never receive too much support!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unwarranted and can be mitigated by the various support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone and how to find joy despite stressors such as exams and deadlines.
