Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Taking such a significant step was not something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back on the past academic year, I observe a journey filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current position?

One of the foremost and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of beginning university, and if you’re a future student reading this, it could be among your greatest worries. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days before classes kicked off, I spent the entire day hiding in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet others. However, today I can assert that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known, both at this university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it took was striking up casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I take away from this? I realized that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the year’s outset. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, there’s no need to stress! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breakers and events to help you bond with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one quality, it should be authenticity. With such a diverse array of people across the course and university, you’re sure to find others who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can sometimes be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe your peers studying and feel inadequate. Several things aided me in overcoming that sensation, one of which is the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re struggling with something, I can nearly guarantee that others are, too. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Seek help from both your peers and the faculty!

This segues into my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire your success and recognize that students face difficulties. They show compassion towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the conclusion of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned the importance of taking leaps – I made one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to interact with the staff, and it’s certainly one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this dimension of university life is to utilize the assistance that is available to you. You can never have too much of it!

All in all, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both preceding and during university, are often unwarranted and can be eased with the various support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has revealed that I am never alone and has taught me how to find enjoyment amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
