Ten months back, in October 2022, I felt nervous and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Engaging with the unfamiliar was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the early and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This often ranks as one of the most frightening aspects of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a considerable worry. On the first day of moving into my dorm, just days before classes started, I spent the whole day in my room, feeling too intimidated to step out and introduce myself. Now, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the best bonds here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and everything began with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what have I learned? It’s wise to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaking events available to assist you in connecting with others. Furthermore, if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With so many diverse individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded peers.
Another hurdle was the volume of coursework and complexity of the material. There was a clear increase in difficulty from A-levels, and an even steeper rise from the first term to the second. Existing in such a setting can be tough for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors aided me during this time, one being the reassurance that everyone is navigating the same scenario. If you struggle to understand something, I can nearly assure you others do as well. Therefore, do not hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Request support from peers and faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They wish for your success and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They relate to students and keep ongoing communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking chances – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to become acquainted with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the finest things you can do for your own benefit! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the assistance provided. You can never have excessive support!
In summary, this year has demonstrated to me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be alleviated with the support offered by faculty and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I am never alone and taught me how to find joy amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
