Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself anxious, fearful, and uncertain about the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing the unknown wasn’t something my formerly shy and reserved self was used to. As I reflect now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, hurdles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided me, and where do I stand today?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it may be one of your primary worries. On my inaugural day moving into my accommodation, just days before the term kicked off, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room due to the fear of stepping out and introducing myself to others. However, sitting here now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the most wonderful friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which all commenced with engaging in small talk with individuals in similar situations. So, what has this taught me? I realized it’s always worthwhile to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel fully prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaker events and opportunities to help you connect with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one quality, be your true self. There is such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university; you are sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle I faced was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels was significant, and in certain aspects, the transition from the first term to the second felt even steeper. Being thrust into such an atmosphere isn’t always easy on your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, I can almost assure you that others are grappling with it too. So, reach out for assistance. This could be the single most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Seek help from peers and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to flourish and understand that students face difficulties. They relate to students and maintain steady communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support until the culmination of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I spoke of taking leaps at the beginning – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is tremendously beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s unquestionably one of the best things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway from this facet of university life is to leverage the support available to you. You can never have too much help!

All in all, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated by the various support avenues provided by staff and fellow students. It’s taught me that I’m never isolated, and it’s demonstrated how to find joy amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
