Ten months back, in October 2022, I found myself filled with anxiety and uncertainty about the future. I was set to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was something my formerly reserved self wasn’t used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and countless enjoyable moments! So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the very first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This aspect of starting university can feel quite daunting, and for prospective students, it may even be a significant worry. On my initial day of moving into my residence, just days ahead of classes starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and meet others. Today, I proudly state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve found a second family at Imperial, which all began with casual conversations with others in comparable situations. What have I discovered? It’s crucial to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breakers and events designed to facilitate connections. I also realized that being true to yourself is essential. With such a diverse group of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.
Another significant challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can adversely affect your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was recalling that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely others are grappling with it too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for support from peers and faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to flourish and recognize that students face difficulties. They relate to our experiences and keep open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the close of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I talked about taking leaps – I took one by stepping up as a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is invaluable. There are various ways to engage with the staff, and it’s one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the support available. You can never have too much assistance!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness surrounding university are frequently unfounded and can be alleviated through the support provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never truly alone and how to find joy even amid the pressures of exams and deadlines.
