Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what was to come as I readied myself to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! What insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This can be one of the most daunting parts of commencing university, and if you’re a future student, it may be a significant worry. On the initial day of moving into my residence, just prior to the semester starting, I spent the entire day in my room, too fearful to venture out and interact with others. Presently, I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others experiencing similar situations. What did I learn? It’s beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaking activities to assist you in connecting with others. Additionally, be authentic. With such a diverse range of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re certain to meet others like yourself.

Another obstacle was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a clear transition from A-levels, and an even greater shift from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can influence your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was the realization that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you find something difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others do as well. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This is arguably the most essential skill to cultivate during your first year. Reach out for help from fellow students and faculty!

This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They are sympathetic and maintain ongoing communication with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking chances – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with faculty members, which is highly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and this is among the most rewarding actions you can take! My primary lesson is to make the most of the available support. You can never receive too much assistance!

In summary, this year has shown me that anxious feelings regarding university are frequently baseless and can be eased through the support provided by faculty and fellow students. I have learned that I am never isolated and how to find joy despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
