By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously introverted self was used to. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, obstacles overcome, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This can be one of the most daunting elements of starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a significant worry for you. On the inaugural day of moving into my residence, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet anyone. Now, I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the best friendships here at university and within my course. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with fellow students in the same boat. What did I discover? It’s crucial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking events designed to help you engage with others. Additionally, be genuine. With a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to connect with kindred spirits.
Another obstacle was the academic workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly an elevation from A-levels, and an even steeper increase from the first to the second term. Being in such an environment can challenge your self-esteem; you may feel less capable compared to your peers. What aided me was the reminder that everyone experiences similar feelings. If a concept eludes you, chances are others are struggling too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most essential lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out to fellow students and faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges that students encounter. They show empathy and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking leaps earlier – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to build relationships with staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and it is one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to embrace the support available. You can never have too much assistance!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated through the support offered by faculty and fellow students. It has illustrated that I am never truly alone and has taught me how to find joy amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
