Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about my future as I commenced my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into something new was not characteristic of my previously reserved nature. Looking back at the past academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
One of the first and most challenging hurdles was forging friendships. This can be daunting when beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may weigh heavily on your mind. On my initial day moving into accommodations, I spent the entire day in my room, feeling too apprehensive to step outside and socialize. Now, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships here at the university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all originated from light conversations with others in similar circumstances. What have I discovered? It’s advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaking events are available to assist you in connecting with others. Additionally, be authentic. With such a diverse population at the university, you’re sure to encounter people like yourself.
Another obstacle was balancing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a clear increase from A-levels, and an even steeper ascent from the first to the second term. Being in an atmosphere like this can influence your confidence; you might feel less capable compared to your peers. Keep in mind, everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear, others probably share your confusion. Therefore, reach out for assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson of the first year. Seek help from classmates and faculty!
The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the difficulties students encounter. They show understanding and maintain dialogue throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I referenced taking leaps before – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to establish connections with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are various methods to familiarize yourself with faculty, and it’s one of the greatest things you can do for your own benefit! My primary takeaway is to capitalize on the support available. You can never have too much assistance!
In summary, this year revealed that apprehensive feelings about university are often baseless and can be mitigated through the support provided by staff and fellow students. It demonstrated that I am never alone and taught me how to find joy even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
