Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly introverted and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and immense enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and where do I stand now?
One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This often ranks as one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it might be a significant worry for you. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of classes, I spent the entire day confined to my room, too apprehensive to step out and meet others. Today, I’m pleased to say that I’ve made some of the greatest friends here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what have I taken away from this? It’s wise to take the plunge at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or feel uneasy, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker events will be available to assist you in connecting with others. Additionally, if you can embody one trait, be genuine. With such a vast range of diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a marked leap from A-levels, and even more so between the first and second terms. Being in such an atmosphere can challenge your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. What supported me was recalling that everyone is experiencing the same situation. If something is unclear to you, I can almost assure you that others are puzzled too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to grasp during the first year. Look for support from classmates and faculty!
This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They desire your success and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They show understanding and maintain regular communication with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to become acquainted with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are many opportunities to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the most beneficial steps you can take for yourself! My primary lesson is to capitalize on the support provided. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated through the support offered by staff and fellow students. I’ve realized that I’m never solitary and how to have a good time despite the pressure from exams and deadlines.
