Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I faced anxiety and uncertainty about what lay ahead as I geared up to commence my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Diving into the unfamiliar was not typical for my previously reserved nature. Looking back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, hurdles, and enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current position?
One of the early and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of embarking on university life, and if you’re a prospective student, it may be a significant worry. On my initial day moving into my residence, just days before classes started, I spent the whole day in my room, feeling too intimidated to venture out and connect with others. Today, I can proudly declare that I’ve formed some of the best friendships at the university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which all started with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I learn? It’s important to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared, don’t fret! There will be many ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned to embrace my true self. With the diverse personalities across the program and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded peers.
Another obstacle was the magnitude of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and an even greater leap from the first to the second term. Being in such an environment can be challenging for your self-confidence; you may observe others studying and feel less capable. What supported me was the realization that everyone shares similar experiences. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely others struggle as well. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might just be the most crucial lesson of the first year. Reach out to peers and faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and keep open lines of communication with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned making leaps previously – I made one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with faculty, which is tremendously beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and it’s one of the best steps you can take for your own benefit! My key takeaway is to leverage the support available. You can never have too much help!
In summary, this year revealed to me that the anxieties regarding university are frequently misplaced and can be soothed with the backing provided by staff and fellow students. It taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
