Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what the future held. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Engaging with the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and withdrawn self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standpoint?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you are a potential student reading this, it may be among your main worries. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too fearful to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, as I sit here today, I can assertively state that I have formed some of the finest friendships I have ever had at this university and in this program. I have discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with light conversations with people facing similar circumstances. So, what lesson did I glean? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always the best course. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t be concerned! There will be plenty of opportunities for ice-breakers and events to help you interact with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, it should be authenticity. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to find those who are aligned with your mindset.

Another challenge was the volume of work and complexity of content. The transition from A-levels was certainly significant, and in certain respects, even more pronounced from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment can be a blow to your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. A few factors helped me navigate through that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar struggles. If you are confused about something, I can nearly guarantee that others are too. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from both your peers and the instructors!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware that students encounter challenges. They show understanding towards students and keep ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the supportive resources until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so sooner. I referenced taking chances earlier – I did take one at the year’s start by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to familiarize myself with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and this is certainly one of the finest choices you can make for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to fully utilize the assistance available. You can never have an excess of support!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated with the various support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated to me that I am never isolated and taught me how to find joy despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
