Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I found myself filled with anxiety and uncertainty as I embarked on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my formerly shy and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyable moments! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand today?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of starting university, and if you are a prospective student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my initial day of moving into my lodgings, just days ahead of the semester starting, I remained in my room the entire day, too daunted to venture out and meet new people. Now, I can proudly assert that I’ve made some of the closest friendships here at this university and within my course. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with fellow students facing similar situations. So, what have I come to understand? It’s advantageous to take a leap of faith at the beginning of the year. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse array of people across the course and university, you’re certain to find those who click with you.
Another challenge involved the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a noticeable increase from A-levels, and an even more significant jump from the first to the second term. Being in such an atmosphere can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel insufficient. What aided me was the realization that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re struggling with something, it’s likely that others are too. Thus, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might be the most vital lesson from the first year. Reach out for assistance from peers and faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and keep open lines of communication with us about our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had started earlier. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with the staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My primary takeaway is to fully utilize the support available. You can never have too much help!
In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehension leading up to and during university is frequently unwarranted and can be eased with the backing from faculty and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I’m never truly alone and has taught me how to find joy even amid stressors like exams and deadlines.
