Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my former shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what have I discovered, and what is my status now?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most anxiety-inducing elements of beginning university, and if you’re a future student, it might be your greatest concern. On my initial day of moving into the residence, days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, far too daunted to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly assert I’ve made some remarkable friends here at university and within my program. I’ve uncovered a second family at Imperial, simply by engaging in casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? It’s most beneficial to take a chance at the start of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaker events available to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that being your authentic self is essential. With such a wide range of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the volume of work and complexity of the content. There was a clear increase from A-levels, and an even more significant leap from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can test your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was recalling that everyone is in the same situation. If you don’t grasp something, others likely don’t either. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year. Reach out for help from friends and faculty!
This transitions to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and understand the challenges students encounter. They relate to us and communicate about our concerns throughout the academic year. I didn’t fully leverage pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking chances – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with faculty members, which is invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the support provided. You can never have excess!
In summary, this year has enlightened me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated with the help available from faculty and fellow students. It has demonstrated to me that I’m never alone and taught me how to find enjoyment despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
