Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not a scenario my previously introverted and reserved self was prepared for. Looking back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university life, and if you are an incoming student, it may be among your greatest worries. On my opening day of moving into my accommodation, just days prior to the term starting, I spent the entire day cloistered in my room, too apprehensive to step out and meet others. Now, though, I can assertively state that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had here at university and in this program. I’ve established a second family at Imperial, and it all began with a bit of casual conversation with individuals facing similar experiences. So, what have I discovered? I’ve realized that it’s best to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking occasions and events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if you can be anything, be true to yourself. With such a diverse array of people within the program and university, you are sure to encounter individuals who share your interests.
Another challenge I faced was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a considerable increase from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even more significant transition from the first term to the second. Being plunged into such an atmosphere can challenge your confidence; you might observe others studying and think you fall short. A few factors helped me navigate this feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is on the same journey. If you find something difficult to grasp, I can nearly guarantee that others are struggling too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek help. This may be the most crucial lesson to take away from the first year. Reach out to your peers and faculty for assistance!
This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face challenges. They are sympathetic towards students and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had recognized its value earlier. I spoke earlier about taking leaps – I took one at the year’s beginning by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This role enabled me to become acquainted with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway concerning this aspect of university is to leverage the assistance available. You can never receive too much support!
In summary, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be eased through the various support resources offered by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
