By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into unfamiliar territory was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This certainly ranks as one of the more challenging elements of beginning university, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it may be one of your main concerns. On the day I moved into my residence, a few days before the semester started, I spent the entire time sequestered in my room because I felt too daunted to step out and introduce myself. However, sitting here today, I can assert that I’ve made some of the best friends I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it took was some casual conversation with individuals in comparable situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that initiating a leap at the year’s start is always the best approach. If you don’t feel entirely ready or comfortable, no need to fret! There will be plenty of opportunities and events designed to help you engage with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, it’s to be yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals in the program and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even more significant transition from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment doesn’t always boost your confidence; you might observe peers studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me combat that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar experiences. If something is unclear to you, I can almost assure you there are others grappling with the same issue. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Request help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They relate to students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the academic year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had engaged with it earlier. I referred to taking leaps before – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to get acquainted with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best steps you can take for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most out of the support available to you. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be eased through the various support channels provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has illustrated how to find enjoyment alongside the pressures of exams and deadlines.
