Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to begin my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was accustomed to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and joy. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of starting university, and if you are a prospective student, it might be a significant worry. On my initial day settling into accommodations, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entirety of the day in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet others. Now, I can assuredly state that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships here at this university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with those in comparable situations. So, what did I glean? It’s advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. Additionally, if you can embody one thing, just be yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re certain to encounter like-minded peers.
Another hurdle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was a noticeable shift from A-levels, and an even larger leap from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can be challenging for your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel insufficient. What aided me was recalling that everyone is in a similar position. If you’re struggling to grasp something, others probably are as well. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson learned in the first year. Request help from both peers and staff!
This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and acknowledge the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and keep consistent communication with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had earlier. I previously mentioned taking risks – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is priceless. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary insight is to utilize the support provided. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has taught me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the support that staff and fellow students offer. It has demonstrated that I am never alone and has shown me how to find joy in my experiences despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
