Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself filled with anxiety and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year packed with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand today?

A significant initial hurdle was forging friendships. This often represents one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a considerable concern for you. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, just a few days before classes started, I spent the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to step out and mingle. Today, I can proudly declare that I’ve made some wonderful friends both at university and on my course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I take away from this experience? It’s wise to take the plunge at the beginning of the year. If you feel unprepared, that’s alright! Numerous ice-breaker activities are available to facilitate connections. Moreover, be authentic. With the diverse range of individuals throughout the course and the university, you’re sure to find like-minded peers.

Another significant challenge revolved around the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a shift from A-levels, and an even more substantial leap from the first term to the second. Being in such a stimulating environment can test your self-assurance; you might feel inadequate when comparing yourself to peers. Keep in mind, everyone is experiencing similar feelings. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are too. Therefore, seek assistance. This is arguably the most crucial lesson from the first year. Reach out for support from classmates and faculty!

This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They empathize and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to connect with the staff—a truly beneficial opportunity. There are numerous avenues to engage with the faculty, and it’s one of the most advantageous things you can do for your own benefit! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the support available. You can never have too much help!

Ultimately, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety regarding university are often misplaced and can be mitigated through the support offered by both staff and fellow students. I’ve realized that I am never truly alone and learned how to make the most of my experience despite the pressure from exams and deadlines.
