Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Diving into the unfamiliar was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This often proves to be one of the most daunting parts of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be a significant worry. On the first day of moving into my residence, a few days ahead of the term’s start, I spent the whole day locked in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet individuals. However, fast forward to today, and I can confidently state that I’ve made some of the greatest friends here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all initiated with casual conversations with those in similar situations. What did I take away from this? It’s essential to take a chance early in the year. If you feel unprepared, no worries! There will be countless ice-breaker opportunities and events to assist in connecting with others. Moreover, if you can embody one trait, let it be authenticity. With a diverse range of individuals in the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge involved the demands of coursework and the complexity of the subject matter. There was certainly a significant increase from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Navigating such an environment can sometimes be tough on your self-esteem; witnessing others study might leave you feeling inadequate. Several elements helped me cope with that feeling, one being the assurance that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If something is unclear to you, I can almost guarantee others are in the same position. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could very well be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to flourish and recognize that students face challenges. They show empathy and maintain ongoing dialogue with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I did not fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I regret not doing it sooner. I mentioned taking risks – I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best investments you can make in yourself! My primary takeaway is to leverage the assistance available. You can never have too much guidance!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are often unwarranted and can be eased through the support mechanisms provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
