Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself feeling anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not a scenario my typically reserved self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year delivered, and what is my current state?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This frequently stands as one of the most daunting elements of embarking on university life, and if you are a prospective student, it may be a primary concern. On my first day of moving into my housing, a few days ahead of the term starting, I remained in my room the entire day, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Today, I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the most remarkable friendships here at this university and within my program. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual chats with individuals in comparable situations. So, what has this taught me? I realized that taking a risk at the year’s beginning is essential. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, do not fret! There will be numerous opportunities and events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that authenticity is crucial. With such a diverse range of people across the program and university, you are sure to encounter kindred spirits.
Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a steep transition from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being submerged in such an environment can be challenging to your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If a concept eludes you, I can almost certainly say that others are struggling too. Thus, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to excel and comprehend the challenges students endure. They show understanding toward students and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t make use of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I talked about making risks – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it ranks among the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to seize the support available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of apprehension, both before and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased with the support available from staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never truly alone and how to find enjoyment despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
