Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. But what insights has this year provided, and where do I find myself today?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This aspect of beginning university can be daunting, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a prominent worry. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Today, however, I can proudly say I’ve established some of the most meaningful friendships here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with simple exchanges with people in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a risk at the onset of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel fully prepared or at ease, fear not! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events designed to help you bond with others. I also found that being authentic is vital. With such a myriad of diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re likely to encounter those who align with you.

Another obstacle was balancing the workload and the difficulty of the material. There was a clear escalation from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such an environment can test your self-assurance; you might see others studying and feel less capable. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming this sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same circumstances. If you find something challenging, I can almost guarantee others are facing the same issue. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might be the most significant skill to cultivate in your first year. Reach out for assistance from your peers and faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely wish for your success and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They show empathy toward students and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year concerning our issues. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it sooner. I mentioned taking risks earlier – one such risk was stepping up to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to engage with faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to connect with the staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this university experience is to capitalize on the support available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be alleviated with the various support avenues provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
