Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Engaging with the unknown wasn’t something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more nerve-wracking facets of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student glancing at this, it may be one of your primary worries. On my initial day moving into my accommodations, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too afraid to venture out and meet others. However, reflecting today, I can assert that I’ve developed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with brief conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a chance at the start of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, be yourself. With such a diverse array of people across the course and university, you’re bound to find those similar to you.
An additional challenge was the workload and complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the subsequent one. Being thrown into such a setting isn’t always simple for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel insufficient. Several factors aided me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same waters. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you that there are others who don’t either. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to adopt in the first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and realize that students face challenges. They share our experiences and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the conclusion of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking chances previously – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to build relationships with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and it’s definitely among the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this university experience is to leverage the support available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often misplaced and can be alleviated with the ample support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never on my own and how to find enjoyment alongside pressures such as exams and deadlines.
