Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my once timid and quiet self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what have I gleaned from this year, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be one of your greatest concerns. On my moving day into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room due to my hesitation to step out and meet others. However, as I sit here now, I can proudly assert that I have made some of the finest friends I’ve ever encountered, here at this university and in this program. I’ve found a second family at Imperial, and it simply required some casual conversations with those in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking an initial leap at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, fear not! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and activities to facilitate making connections with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, let it be your true self. With such a diverse array of individuals within the course and university, you’re sure to encounter people like yourself.

Another challenge pertained to the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can occasionally undermine your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few elements assisted me in navigating that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone shares similar struggles. If something isn’t clear to you, I can almost assure you that there are at least a few others grappling with the same issue. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask your peers and the faculty for help!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face challenges. They relate to students and maintain continuous communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it sooner. I hinted at taking leaps earlier – I took one at the year’s commencement by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and this is undoubtedly one of the best investments you can make for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to take full advantage of the assistance available to you. You can never have too much support!

In a broader sense, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both before entering and during university, are nearly always unwarranted and can be eased by the multitude of support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and has equipped me to find enjoyment even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
