Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the brink of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing the unknown was unfamiliar territory for my previously timid and introverted self. Looking back now, I recognize a year abundant with personal development, hurdles, and enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and where do I find myself now?

One of the primary and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of entering university, and if you are a future student, it may weigh heavily on your mind. On my initial day of moving into the dormitory, a few days prior to the academic term starting, I spent the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to step out and meet others. Now, I can proudly assert that I’ve cultivated some of the most meaningful friendships here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual chats with individuals in analogous situations. So, what lesson did I glean? I discovered that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, do not fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events designed to assist you in meeting others. I also learned that authenticity is vital. With the plethora of diverse individuals throughout the program and university, you are sure to encounter like-minded peers.

Another hurdle was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was a significant transition from A-levels, and an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can challenge your self-assurance; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. What assisted me in overcoming this was the realization that everyone shares a similar experience. If something is unclear to you, likely others are in the same boat. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Request assistance from colleagues and faculty!

This transitions me to my next point. The staff in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and maintain open communication with us throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I made one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to become acquainted with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are multiple avenues to connect with staff, and it’s among the best personal investments you can make! My main takeaway from this university aspect is to take full advantage of the support available. You can never have too much assistance!

In conclusion, this year has illustrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be alleviated with the variety of support systems provided by staff and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I am never alone and taught me how to find joy despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
