Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh student. Immersing myself in the unknown was not something my previously introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This aspect is often one of the most frightening elements of starting university, and if you’re a future student, it may be a significant worry. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, just days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day in my room, too afraid to step outside and socialize. Today, I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever known, both at this university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what’s the takeaway? It’s advisable to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not ready or at ease, that’s okay! There are ample ice-breaking chances and events to help you engage with others. I’ve also realized that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse group of individuals in the program and university, you’re sure to find those who align with you.

Another obstacle was coping with the workload and the levels of content difficulty. There was a marked jump from A-levels, and even more so from the first to the second term. Being in this type of environment can challenge your confidence; you might observe your peers studying and feel insufficient. A few things helped me through this, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating similar experiences. If you’re struggling with something, it’s likely that others are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital skill to hone in your first year. Reach out for help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges that students encounter. They show empathy towards us and keep open lines of communication throughout the year concerning our issues. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are various ways to engage with the faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to leverage the support available. You can never have too much assistance!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the help provided by faculty and fellow students. It has demonstrated to me that I’m never alone and has taught me how to find enjoyment despite stressors such as exams and deadlines.
