About ten months back, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved persona was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights did this year provide, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most anxiety-inducing elements of commencing university, and if you’re a future student, it may weigh heavily on your mind. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, feeling too daunted to venture out and engage with others. However, today, I can proudly declare that I’ve made some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not completely prepared or at ease, there’s no need for concern! There will be numerous ice-breaking happenings and events designed to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you are certain to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle I faced was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was a stark transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, I can almost certainly assure you that others share your predicament. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to absorb during the first year. Look for support from your classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials is fantastic. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They empathize with us and maintain consistent communication throughout the year concerning our difficulties. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had started earlier. I mentioned taking risks before – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a wellbeing representative for the year. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s one of the most rewarding actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway from this facet of university is to capitalize on the assistance provided. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated through the myriad of support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to find joy in the midst of pressures such as exams and deadlines.
