Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I found myself anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not characteristic of my previously timid and reserved nature. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and where do I stand now?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more fearsome aspects of beginning university, and if you’re viewing this as a potential student, it may be a concern on your mind. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days before classes began, I spent the whole day confined to my room because I was too apprehensive to step out and introduce myself to others. Sitting here today, though, I can assertively say that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all stemmed from making casual conversation with others in comparable situations. So, what did I gain from this? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the outset of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t be concerned! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breakers and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can embody one quality, it’s to be yourself. There are numerous diverse individuals throughout the course and university; you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the workload and the challenging content. There was indeed a notable transition from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting isn’t often conducive to your confidence; you might observe peers studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the acknowledgment that everyone shares the same experience. If there’s something you don’t grasp, I can almost assure you that at least a few others are also perplexed. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This may be the most crucial lesson to adopt in your first year. Request assistance from peers and staff!

This leads me to my next point. The personnel in Materials are extraordinary. They genuinely wish for you to succeed and are aware that students face challenges. They relate to students and keep consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking chances – I indeed took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely valuable. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s certainly one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My chief takeaway from this segment of university is to seize the support provided to you. You can never have too much!

In general, this year has enlightened me that anxious feelings, both preceding and during university, are almost always baseless and can be eased with the numerous support options accessible from staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never truly alone, and it has taught me how to find enjoyment even amidst sources of stress like exams and deadlines.
