Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown wasn’t something my previously timid and introverted nature was familiar with. Looking back now, I see a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?
One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening elements of commencing university, and for prospective students, it may be a significant concern. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term commencing, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself to others. Now, I can assert that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had here at university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what have I realized? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and events designed to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that being authentic is crucial. With such a diverse community across the course and the university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate this feeling, one being the acknowledgment that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, I can nearly assure you that others are too. Hence, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to absorb during the first year. Reach out for help from peers and staff!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the difficulties students encounter. They share our concerns and engage in ongoing communication with us throughout the year. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to familiarize myself with the staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never have an excess!
In summary, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated through the support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
