By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously timid and introverted nature was used to. Looking back, I see a year filled with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current position?

One of the earliest and most intimidating obstacles was building friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening aspects of starting university, and if you’re a future student, it might be a significant worry for you. On my first day moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of classes starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too fearful to emerge and introduce myself. Yet today, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the best friendships here at this university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in the same boat. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not ready or feel uneasy, don’t stress! There will be plenty of ice-breaking activities designed to help you meet others. I also learned that authenticity is crucial. With such a diverse community throughout the course and university, you’re destined to encounter like-minded people.

Another trial was managing the workload and the difficulty of the material. There was certainly an increase from A-levels, and in some ways, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can dent your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. What assisted me was the acknowledgment that everyone is navigating the same waters. If something confounds you, I can almost assure you that others are struggling with it too. So, ask for assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Seek help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges faced by students. They connect with us and keep open lines of communication throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t really tap into the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are various ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for your own well-being! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to utilize the assistance provided. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has imparted that I’m never alone and has taught me how to enjoy myself despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
