Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current situation?
One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is undeniably one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be among your greatest worries. On my initial day settling into my dormitory, a few days prior to the semester’s start, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. Nevertheless, as I sit here now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I have ever experienced at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, beginning with casual conversations with others who were in similar circumstances. So, what have I taken away from this? I learned that making a bold move at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you find yourself unprepared or uneasy, fret not! There will be ample ice-breaking moments and activities designed to facilitate connections. I also discovered that if you can embody anything, be true to yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals across the program and the university, you are sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere isn’t always beneficial for your self-assurance; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. A few factors helped me navigate those feelings, one being the realization that everyone shares the same experience. If you find something incomprehensible, I can nearly guarantee that others are too. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty for support!
This brings me to my next point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face challenges. They demonstrate understanding and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway from this facet of university life is to leverage the help that’s available. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has illustrated to me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and throughout university, are usually unwarranted and can be mitigated through the various support avenues provided by staff and fellow students. It has revealed that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to have fun amidst the stressors such as exams and deadlines.
