Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Diving into the unknown wasn’t something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Reflecting back, I realize this year has been filled with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted on me, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most daunting challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more intimidating aspects of commencing university, and if you are a prospective student reading this, it might be one of your greatest concerns. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days ahead of the semester starting, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and greet anyone. As I sit here now, I can assertively state that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals experiencing similar feelings. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and events designed to facilitate connections. I also realized that if you can embody one quality, let it be authenticity. There are countless diverse individuals throughout the program and the university; you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge I had to confront was the quantity of work and difficulty of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in certain ways, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe peers studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that feeling, one of which was the acknowledgement that everyone shares your experience. If something is unclear, I can almost assure you that there are several others who are equally perplexed. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial thing to learn to do in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from fellow students and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand that students encounter difficulties. They empathize with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I initially mentioned taking leaps – I made one at the start of the year by becoming a well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to become acquainted with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this dimension of university life is to capitalize on the assistance available to you. There is never too much!

In a broader sense, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and while in university, are frequently unfounded and can be alleviated by the plethora of support options accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone, and it has taught me how to find joy amidst sources of stress like examinations and deadlines.
