Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously timid and reserved self was accustomed to. Reflecting on this past year, I recognize a period brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current state?

One of the initial and most formidable challenges I encountered was forging friendships. This undoubtedly ranks as one of the more intimidating elements of commencing university, and if you’re perusing this as a potential student, it may be among your most pressing worries. On my first day moving into my accommodation, just days before the term commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here today, I can assert confidently that I have formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this program. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in small talk with those in akin situations. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, fret not! Numerous ice-breaker gatherings and events will be available to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With so many diverse people across the program and the university, you’re sure to find like-minded individuals.

Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a notable leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can sometimes undermine your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors helped me navigate through that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you there are others who also struggle. Thus, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may well be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from peers and faculty!

This transitions me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They empathize with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I spoke earlier about taking leaps – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are ample opportunities to establish rapport with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to seize the help that’s offered. You can never have too much of it!

On a broader scale, this year has instilled in me the understanding that feelings of nervousness, both in anticipation of and during university, are often baseless and can be alleviated through the numerous support options available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and has guided me in learning how to have fun amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
