Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Immersing myself in unfamiliar territory wasn’t something my previous timid and reserved nature was accustomed to. Looking back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what has this year imparted to me, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most daunting hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more fearsome elements of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it may be one of your greatest worries. On my first day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room due to my apprehension about leaving and introducing myself to others. However, sitting here today, I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the best friendships of my life here at this university and in this course. I’ve developed a second family at Imperial, and it all started with engaging in casual conversations with others in the same boat. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take that initial plunge at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities and events to aid in connecting with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, just be yourself. There are countless diverse individuals throughout the course and the university; you’re certain to meet people who resonate with you.

Another challenge I needed to surmount was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a noticeable elevation from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience as you. If there’s something you don’t grasp, I can nearly assure you there are several others who also find it confusing. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn during your first year. Reach out for help from your fellow students and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They empathize with students and keep constant communication regarding our concerns throughout the year. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year drew to a close, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to familiarize myself with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. Numerous methods exist to connect with faculty, and it is certainly one of the finest things you can do for yourself! My main lesson from this university experience is to take full advantage of the support being offered. You can never have too much assistance!

Overall, this year has revealed to me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are usually unfounded and can be mitigated by the wide array of support available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never truly alone, and it has taught me how to enjoy myself alongside stresses such as exams and deadlines.
