Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously shy and reserved nature was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year full of personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyable moments! But what insights did this year provide, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting elements of commencing university, and for those reading this as prospective students, it might be one of your greatest worries. On my first day moving into my residence, just a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. However, as I sit here now, I can confidently state that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, both at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it necessitated was engaging in light conversation with others in comparable situations. So, what lesson did I gather? I learned that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities and events to facilitate your connections with others. I also discovered that if you can embody anything, be yourself. With a multitude of diverse individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to find those who connect with you.

Another challenge was handling the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always easy for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors helped me navigate through that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you that others are also finding it tough. Therefore, seek help. This might be the single most crucial lesson to learn in the first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and the staff!

This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to excel and recognize the challenges students face. They sympathize with students and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year about our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to build rapport with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are many ways to connect with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My main takeaway from this aspect of university is to leverage the assistance available. You can never have too much!

All in all, this year has taught me that nervous feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased with the various support avenues provided by staff and fellow students. It’s taught me that I’m never alone, and it’s demonstrated how to find enjoyment amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
