Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal growth, obstacles, and pleasure. But what insights has this year provided, and where do I find myself now?

One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting aspects of entering university, and if you are an incoming student, it may be one of your greatest worries. On my initial day moving into my lodging, just days ahead of the term’s start, I spent an entire day isolated in my room, too daunted to step out and meet new people. Nevertheless, reflecting on my experiences now, I can proudly state that I have developed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all started with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? I discovered that it’s always beneficial to make a move at the beginning of the year. If you’re not yet prepared or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events designed to help you connect with others. I also came to understand that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With so many varied individuals across the program and university, you are sure to find those who connect with you.

Another challenge was managing the coursework and the difficulty of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere can be taxing for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel less capable. A few factors aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can almost assure you that others are also in the dark. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to absorb in your first year. Seek out help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is extraordinary. They want you to thrive and recognize the challenges that students encounter. They relate to students and maintain regular communication with us throughout the year about our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had started earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I took one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely valuable. There are many avenues to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s undeniably one of the finest things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to fully utilize the assistance available to you. You can never have too much!

All in all, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be alleviated through the numerous support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has illustrated how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
