Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in unfamiliar territory wasn’t something my previously introverted and reserved persona was accustomed to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re currently reading this as a potential student, it may be one of your greatest worries. On my first day moving into my residence, just a few days before the semester kicked off, I spent the entire day cooped up in my room, too daunted to go out and interact with others. Yet, as I sit here now, I can proudly say that I’ve made some of the most incredible friends I’ve ever encountered, both at this university and within this program. I discovered a second family here at Imperial, beginning with some light conversation with fellow students facing similar situations. So, what have I taken away from this? I realized that it’s always wise to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breaking and events to aid in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, be true to yourself. With such a diverse crowd throughout the course and university, you’re certain to find others who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the difficulty of the content. There was indeed a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some instances, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting isn’t always easy for your self-esteem; you might observe peers studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that feeling, one being the affirmation that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If something eludes your understanding, I can nearly assure you there are others in the same position. Hence, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is outstanding. They desire your success and recognize that students face difficulties. They show empathy towards students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking chances – I made one at the year’s onset by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which has immense value. There are numerous opportunities to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My main takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance available to you. You can never have too much support!

Generally, this year has imparted that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be alleviated by the numerous support avenues provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never truly alone, and it has demonstrated how to enjoy myself while facing stressors such as exams and deadlines.
