Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as a time of personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current position?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most nerve-wracking elements of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my inaugural day of moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term’s start, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Now, I can proudly say I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. What did I discover? I learned that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is essential. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breaking and events to help you bond with others. I also learned that being true to yourself is the most effective strategy. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and the university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.
Yet another challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can be challenging for your confidence; you might observe peers studying and feel inadequate. What benefited me was recalling that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find something perplexing, chances are others do as well. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!
This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They empathize with our situations and maintain ongoing communication regarding our concerns throughout the year. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I alluded to taking risks previously – I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to fully utilize the resources available. You can never have an excess of support!
In conclusion, this year has illuminated for me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the assistance from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated and how to have fun despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
