Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved personality was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyable moments! But what insights did this year provide, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was meeting new people. This is often one of the most frightening parts of beginning university, and if you are an incoming student, it may be a significant worry. On moving day, just days before classes commenced, I remained in my room for the whole day, too hesitant to go out and introduce myself. However, today I can proudly state that I have established some of the most meaningful friendships here at the university and within my program. I’ve found a second family at Imperial, all because of initiating small conversations with others in comparable circumstances. So, what have I discovered? I learned that it’s beneficial to take a chance at the start of the year. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, that’s alright! There will be countless ice-breaker events to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse mix of individuals at the course and university, you’re sure to meet like-minded peers.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was a perceptible shift from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even more significant transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can shake your self-assurance; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors helped me overcome that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If something is unclear to you, I can almost guarantee others are confused too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most vital lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out to peers and faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show understanding and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking chances – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for the year. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this part of university life is to make the most of the support provided. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the various support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to have fun despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
