Ten months prior, in October 2022, I faced anxiety and uncertainty regarding the future as I geared up to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not a scenario my formerly reserved self was used to. Looking back on the past academic year, I can see a path of personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is often a significant worry for incoming university students. On my first day at my accommodation, before the semester commenced, I remained in my room all day, too apprehensive to venture out and connect with others. Today, I can proudly state that I’ve established some of the best friendships here at the university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. The takeaway? Make an effort at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared, that’s alright! There are numerous ice-breaker events designed to assist you in connecting with others. Be true to yourself, and you’ll meet individuals like you.

Another obstacle was the sheer volume of work and complexity of the material. The shift from A-levels was substantial, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inadequate when it appears others are managing better. Keep in mind, everyone is facing similar challenges. If you find something confusing, chances are others are too. Seek assistance from peers and faculty; it’s vital during your first year.

The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They keep us informed regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative, which aided me in connecting with staff. There are numerous opportunities to become acquainted with faculty, and it’s one of the most beneficial actions you can take. Make the most of the support available; there’s no such thing as too much!

This year has shown me that feelings of nervousness about university are often baseless and can be alleviated through the support provided by staff and fellow students. I’ve realized I’m never isolated and how to find enjoyment amid the pressures of exams and deadlines.
