Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing the unknown was not something my formerly timid self was used to. Reflecting on the year, I can see it was filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I currently stand?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This aspect of starting university can often be one of the most nerve-wracking, and if you’re considering this path, it may be a significant worry for you. On my first day moving into my dormitory, a few days prior to the commencement of classes, I remained in my room all day, too apprehensive to venture out and meet new people. However, today I can assert that I have formed some incredible friendships here at university and within my program. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what lesson did I learn? It’s essential to take a leap at the year’s onset. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaker activities to facilitate connections. I also recognized that being authentic is crucial. With such a diverse array of individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.
An additional challenge was the intensity of the workload and the difficulty of the material. There was a clear escalation from A-levels, and an even more significant leap between the first and second terms. Being in such an atmosphere can weigh heavily on your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. What assisted me was recalling that everyone shares the same experience. If you find something confusing, it’s likely that others do as well. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most pivotal lesson of the first year. Look for support from classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the difficulties students encounter. They empathize and keep open lines of communication concerning our issues. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke about taking leaps – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is invaluable. There are various ways to become acquainted with the faculty, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My primary takeaway is to utilize the support available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety regarding university are often unfounded and can be mitigated with the assistance from faculty and fellow students. It taught me that I’m never alone and how to have fun in spite of pressures such as exams and deadlines.
