In October 2022, ten months back, I was overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyable moments! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting parts of initiating university life, and if you are reading this as a prospective student, it may be among your greatest concerns. On my first day of moving into my housing, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and meet others. Sitting here today, I can assuredly state that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I could have ever asked for at this university and in this course. I’ve created a second family at Imperial, and all it took was a bit of light conversation with individuals in comparable situations. So, what did I uncover? I discovered that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel entirely ready or secure, don’t fret! There will be plenty of opportunities and events designed to break the ice and assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. There are a multitude of diverse individuals within the course and university; you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with you.

Another challenge was coping with the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even larger transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment is not always easy on your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel lesser. A few factors helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone is navigating similar waters. If you find something confusing, I can nearly guarantee that others are too. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Seek help from your peers and faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students encounter challenges. They show understanding and maintain ongoing dialogue with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking risks before – I took one at the year’s onset by stepping into the role of a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with faculty, and it’s certainly one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to capitalize on the assistance available to you. You can never have too much help!

In a broader sense, this year has imparted that feelings of anxiety, both preceding and during university, are almost invariably unfounded and can be eased through the various support systems accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has demonstrated how to find enjoyment even amid the pressures of exams and deadlines.
