Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was set to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Diving into the unknown was not something my once-timid self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gathered this year, and what is my current state?

One of the first and most overwhelming hurdles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more frightening facets of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it might be one of your major worries. On my initial day moving into my dorm, just days before the term began, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever known, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all stemmed from casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what lesson did I take away? It’s wise to take a chance at the start of the year. If you’re not quite ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking activities to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that if you choose to embody one quality, let it be authenticity. With such diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a shift from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can affect your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel less capable. A few factors helped me cope with that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping something, I can nearly guarantee others are too. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Seek help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand that students face challenges. They show empathy towards students and maintain open lines of communication with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t really engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I talked about taking risks – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role gave me the opportunity to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never receive too much!

In a more general sense, this year has illustrated that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be diminished with the support options extended by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never truly alone, and it has taught me how to embrace enjoyment even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
